Overview
This course is a gateway to a fulfilling career in healthcare support. You'll gain the skills needed to assist professionals in hospitals, homes, schools, and health centres. Allied health support workers support a range of allied health professionals including occupational therapists, podiatrists, speech and language therapists, dieticians, physiotherapists, orthoptists and others. There are many different roles you can move into.
Entry requirements
For this course you’ll need:
- five relevant National 5 qualifications or a relevant National 5 course such as Health and Social Care or their equivalent, N5 English is desirable.
- a detailed personal statement on your application form
- skills such as active listening, clear communication, and interpersonal skills
- qualities of acceptance, genuineness, and empathy
- an interview
- to become a member of the PVG scheme*
If you do not have the required qualifications but can demonstrate the ability to work at SCQF level 6 and have life/work experience, skills and qualities relevant to the care sector we may also consider you for a place.
*Students will apply for membership or an update to join the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme. This involves a police check by Disclosure Scotland. You can ask about this at the point of application or interview, and this is highly recommended for applicants who have a criminal history.
Course content
This course covers a wide range of subjects including:
- working in the health sector: explore the sector and gain an understanding of roles, responsibilities and day to day operations within different healthcare settings
- improving health and wellbeing: look at ways to improve overall health and promote positive wellbeing
- safe practice in care: look at protocols and procedures to maintain a safe and secure environment within care settings
- human body: learn about the human anatomy and physiology of the human body and gain an understanding of the body's systems and their functions
- human development and behaviour: explore human development and understand factors that influence human behaviour
- social influences: explore the impact of social factors on health and wellbeing
- values and principles of health and social care: investigate the ethical principles guiding health and social care practices and the values that underpin professional conduct
- caring for people with dementia: gain knowledge and skills for providing care to individuals with dementia, exploring compassionate and effective approaches and learning how to support caregivers
- health, safety, and protection in care settings: learn how to apply safe protocols within care settings and understand the importance of health and safety in providing quality care
- person-centred care: focus on the principles of person-centred care and develop skills to tailor care approaches to individual needs
You’ll attend informative, interactive workshops with Allied Health Support Workers and take part in work experience in the form of a short, observational placement with an Allied Health Support Worker or department.
Next steps and career opportunities
This course will open doors to within the NHS and the care sector. On completion many students are guaranteed interviews for various Support Worker positions.
Alternatively, students can progress to HNC Healthcare Practice, HNC Social Services or HNC Counselling.
