Overview

This course is for people of any age who would like to develop or refresh their skills and gain confidence. It offers students a high level of support and nurturing, while creating independence. This course meets the needs of applicants who have a learning disability and/or are Autistic

Students come to college 2 hours per week and will achieve a qualification at SCQF Level 1.

Students have the option to combine this with Discover: Healthy Lifestyles to study 4 hours per week.

Course Content

This course focuses on helping students become more independent in their learning, life and work. It helps them to consolidate existing skills, learning new skills and make targets of what they would like to achieve in the future.

Here's just some of what students will be doing:

Developing important skills such as working with others, solving problems and being effective communicators to help them on their learning journey.

Developing practical cookery skills through working on projects that allow students to apply their learning in real-life contexts.

Students will learn:

  • Basic knife skills using everyday kitchen utensils
  • How to operate kitchen equipment safely
  • Health and safety in a kitchen environment
  • Budgeting
  • Food Health and Hygiene.
  • How to cook everyday dishes

Students will examine healthy food choices and turn take-aways into fake-aways. The course will enable those living independently to cook on any budget and make healthier food choices.

On successful completion of this course, students can consolidate their learning with a part-time courses within our supportive environment.
