This course is intended for people interested in perusing a career in Electrical Engineering and will provide you with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to progress onto higher levels of study at College or University.

This is a one year full-time course with attendance of 3 days a week in College.

This qualification can also be gained on a part-time attendance through our HNC Electrical Engineering day release programme which runs one day a week over two years. For more information contact Sarah Taylor, Curriculum Quality Manager - Electrical & Renewables.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements:

  • Two Highers at Grade C or above in Mathematics (not Application of Mathematics) and Physics or Technology subject.
  • A NC in an engineering discipline at Level 6 accompanied with a good academic reference recommending articulation to a higher level.
  • Industrial experience and/or other qualifications will also be considered.

For a place on the course, you will be required to attend an interview.

Applicants whose first language is not English should have a Level 6 or equivalent ESOL qualification to be considered for this course.

Course Content

This course will give you a technical grounding in Electrical Power, Generation, Electrical Safety, and Instrumentation, and will cover the following subjects:

  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Communications
  • DC and AC Principles
  • 3 Phase Systems
  • Electrical Power Systems
  • Electrical Machine Principles
  • Electrical Safety
  • Applications of Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Networks and Resonance
  • IT Applications Software
  • Electrical Installation Skills

You will be assessed throughout each unit. There is also a Graded Unit Examination at the end of the course. You will need to achieve all units and gain a minimum of C grade in the Graded Unit Exam to be awarded your HNC qualification.

Careers and Further Study

Studying HNC Electrical Engineering at Ayrshire College will give you the skills, knowledge and understanding required for successful employment within the Electrical Engineering Industry, Electrical Power Supply and Distribution, or Renewable Energy sectors.

HNC Electrical Engineering is placed at Level 7 on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF). This course is designed to allow progression to a HND in Electrical Engineering or to a degree level program.

The college has an excellent articulation link with Glasgow Caledonia University with entry to BEng(Hons) Electrical Power Engineering Pathway with entry into the 2nd year on successful completion of HNC group award.
