This course is intended for people interested in perusing a career in Electrical Engineering and will provide you with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to progress onto higher levels of study at College or University.
This is a one-year full-time course with attendance of 3 days a week in College. This qualification can also be gained on a part-time attendance through our HNC Electrical Engineering day release programme which runs one day a week over two years. Entry Requirements
Ignite your interest in electrical engineering. To join this course, you'll need:
- two Highers at Grade C or above in Mathematics and Physics or Technology subject.
- a relevant NC at Level 6 accompanied with a good academic reference recommending articulation to a higher level
- industrial experience and/or other qualifications will also be considered
- to attend an interview.

Course Content
Explore the core aspects of electrical engineering and specialise in key areas:
- maths in an engineering context and enhance your IT skills with various software application packages.
- develop knowledge, understanding and skills in a range of core electrical principles, incorporating DC and AC principles, electrical power systems, electrical machine principles and electrical safety.
- master Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and create programs for industrial processes.
- develop practical skills in installing domestic and industrial electrical wiring systems, and practical use of testing instruments.
- achieve a degree of specialisation within the following areas: Electrical Principles, Information Technology, Power Electronics, Networks and Resonance, and Programmable Logic Controllers
Throughout the course you will develop a range of communication knowledge and skills relevant to the needs of electrical engineers.
Next Steps and Career Opportunities
Upon successful completion, you could:
- progress to a relevant Level 8 course (eg HND Electrical Engineering)
- move on to a university degree via articulation arrangements, such as BEng Electrical Power Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University (direct entry to year 3, requiring 2 Grade Bs in projects)
- start your career with an apprenticeship or employment in a technician role within various companies, from local businesses to large multinationals, or in the wind turbine sector.
