Course Content
It is important that you start this course with an open mind and a willingness to learn. A non-judgemental attitude and the ability to empathise is important.
You will investigate the aims and purpose of counselling and the wide range of contexts in which counselling takes place.
You will deepen your understanding of what is meant by counselling when you explore different approaches to it.
You will learn about the skills and qualities required for an effective counselling relationship.
In small groups you will develop skills such as active listening and the positive use of body language. Feedback from others will help you to reflect on what you do well and what you could develop further. Your tutor will support you in developing the ability to provide supportive and constructive feedback.
You will have the opportunity to complete short written activities that contribute towards your achievement of the SQA Qualification.
Learners tend to develop supportive relationships and look to continue their learning after the course has finished.
Next Steps
This course provides basic knowledge and skills that can enhance your relationships and effectiveness in life and work. It does not permit you to refer to yourself as a qualified counsellor.
Learners who want to expand their knowledge and skills further can apply and progress onto the Counselling Theory for Practice (level 6) evening class, that typically runs from January to June.
Full time Health and Social Care courses at level 6 or 7 , and/or counselling evening classes at levels 7 and 8 may be your ultimate goal.
