Computer games is one of the most exciting creative industries and is currently thriving in the UK and worldwide. Continually evolving, it offers superb opportunities for those with a passion for gaming who are looking for a career in a cutting-edge, global industry. To be successful in this industry you need to be technical and creative, as well as good at maths. If you love computer games and aspire to work in the games industry, this is a great course to get you on your way. It’s also a really good starting point if you’re thinking about a career in software development.
Entry Requirements
For entry to this course you’ll need:
- a real interest in computer games
- Four National 5s (including Computing Science or Maths)
OR
- an NQ at Level 5 in a relevant area such as NC Computing
- an interview with us

Course Content
This course will give you a good understanding of the computer games industry and the skills you’ll need to be a game developer.
- You'll begin by looking at the different types of ‘media assets’ needed for developing a game, such as graphics, sounds, animations, videos and text.
- You'll learn about game planning and design.
- You'll look at hardware in gaming technology, along with graphics and sound technology used in digital gaming platforms.
- You'll consider what users expect in games, and then plan and design your own computer game.
- You'll explore audio and learn how to successfully capture, edit and manipulate audio files to industry standard.
- You'll then look at the processes involved in the final stages of computer game development.
- You'll create your own game, evaluate it and promote it to users. Along the way, you’ll focus on specific creative aspects.
- You'll develop skills in animation, producing your own 2D and 3D animated sequences.
- You'll also look at character creation in games.
On the technical side
- You'll develop skills in the creation of user interfaces for games and will plan and design a basic games interface. A key element is the programming skills needed for the games industry.
- You'll look at programming concepts, coding best practice and coding techniques. You'll develop practical skills in using programming constructs and create working computer games using a recognised programming language.
- You'll work on a software development project and develop your own computer game or level.
- You'll also study a bit of Level 6 maths relevant to computer games.
- You'll have the chance to develop your personal and employability skills through taking part in an Enterprise Activity.
Careers and Further Study
In this course you will have built transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving. When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of: Moving onto HNC Computing Games Development Moving onto another HNC course such as HNC Computing (Technical Support and Networking) or HNC Computing (Computer Science) Seeking to start your career with an entry level job or Modern Apprenticeship.
