Overview

If you’re interested in a career in Education Support then this course can help you on your way. It offers you a broad perspective across key areas to prepare you for your next progression route or employment as a support assistant in an Education setting.

Entry Requirements

For entry to this course, you will need:

  • A real interest in supporting children and young people with their education
  • Five relevant National 5s or equivalent including English OR a recent and relevant NC course at SCQF Level 5 or equivalent, such as Early Learning and Childcare Level 5
  • We may ask for a satisfactory reference If you don’t have formal qualifications, but have relevant life experience
  • An interview with us during which you will complete a short, written activity
  • Applicants whose first language is not English should have a minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for level 6 courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D course
  • You should be aware that you will be asked to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme on all care courses at level 6 or above and be occupationally fit for practice.

Course Content

This course develops your knowledge and understanding for working successfully in a support assistant role within a variety of educational settings. The focus is on understanding the role of a support worker and gaining practical experience of the role through a workplace setting.

This qualification covers areas such as:

  • Understanding Professional Practice in an Education Setting
  • Development of Children and Young People in an Education Setting
  • Supporting the Behaviour of Children and Young People in an Education Setting
  • Supporting Children and Young People who require Additional Support for Learning
  • Protecting and Promoting the Rights of the Child
  • Working with Children and Young People with Autism in an Education Setting
  • Supporting Children and Young People with Dyslexia

Careers and Further Study

The PDA Education Support Assistance at Level 6 is appropriate for those who are currently employed or considering employment in the education sector and will enable learners to work as a member of staff who has delegated responsibility for providing care and educational support to children and young people; and who provide support to the learning and teaching process and the wellbeing of children and young people.

  • HNC Childhood Practice Award

Or you may wish to apply for jobs within the Education Sector. This award enables you to register with the SSSC as a Support Worker. 

Skills

You will develop the caring skills and qualities essential for working in an education setting. Some examples include:

  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Employability skills such as timekeeping and being able to use your own initiative
  • Digital skills which are becoming essential to work and home life
  • Leadership and team working skills required to support colleagues in meeting the needs of children and young people

Employer and Industry Links

You will gain workplace experience within Local Authority Education Settings and developing communication skills by completing Makaton Level 1 training.
