Begin your journey into construction with our Pre-Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery. Develop essential skills needed for skilled tradespeople. In just one year, you will develop a solid foundation for a future in carpentry and joinery.

To apply for this course, you'll need:

• a Level 4 qualification in woodwork/carpentry and joinery or demonstrate relevant trade experience
• an interview and/or practical entry test

If you don't have formal qualifications but have a genuine interest in the subject, we will also consider your application.

Explore practical tasks designed to develop the skills essential for a career in carpentry and joinery. This hands-on course covers:

• developing practical hand skills: manufacturing timber joints to form complex frames
• use of woodworking machines and power tools: to construct a timber door and staircase
• understanding 'marking out' details: for carpentry and joinery items
• working from workshop drawings: selecting materials, and using woodworking machines
• exploring construction industry techniques: and focusing on health and safety aspects
• real craft project: your chance to demonstrate your skills in a group project
• site visit to a local building site: experience a live building site
• essential skills: develop transferable skills, including communication, numeracy, and ICT.

When you have successfully finished this course, you may have the opportunity to:

• progress to the Pre-apprenticeship in Carpentry & Joinery (SCQF Level 6)
• seek a carpentry and joinery apprenticeship

This course will allow you to enhance your theoretical knowledge and practical skills by offering a range of activities such as in the marking out, machining, assembly, and installation processes for both a timber door and a staircase. Modern construction techniques are also incorporated within this course as elements of Timber Frame Construction are manufactured. Our students will also get the chance to contribute to a practical project, this will allow the students to display their practical skills.
