Overview

Interested in a career in Electrical Engineering? Well, this could be the course for you! Scotland has a world-renowned reputation for engineering and is at the cutting-edge of engineering developments. Engineers design, create, test and improve all sorts of products and processes. Due to the surge in renewable energy and the already diverse number of electrical engineering roles, this has led to demand for electrical engineers in the job market.

If you’ve got a logical and inquisitive mind, enjoy problem solving and are curious to know how things work, you’ve got it in you to make a great engineer! This course is intended for people interested in perusing a career in electrical engineering or electrical installation aspects of construction or engineering and will provide you with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to progress onto further levels of study at College.

This is a one year full-time course with attendance of 3 days a week in College.

For employed applicants this qualification can also be gained on a part-time attendance through our NC Electrical Engineering day release programme which runs one day a week over two years. For more information contact Sarah Taylor, Curriculum Manager - Electrical & Renewables.

Entry Requirements

  • Four National 5s, or equivalent, at Grade C or above including Mathematics and Physics or Technological related subject. National 5 Applications of Mathematics is not accepted for this course.
  • Successful completion of a relevant Level 5 course, such as Pre-apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering with Renewables or SVQ Performing Engineering Operations – Electrical, accompanied with a good academic reference recommending articulation to a higher level.
  • Industrial experience and/or other qualifications will also be considered.

For a place on the course, you will be required to attend an interview and complete an aptitude test.

Applicants whose first language is not English should have a Level 5 or equivalent ESOL qualification to be considered for this course.

Course Content

This course will give you a technical grounding in Electrical Installation, Safety, and Instrumentation and will cover the following subjects:

  • Mathematics Technician
  • Communications Engineering
  • IT Applications
  • Electrical Principles
  • Fundamental Electrical Systems
  • Electrical Testing and Measurement
  • Cable Ratings and Overcurrent Protection
  • Earthing and Earth Faults Protection
  • Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations
  • Single Phase and 3 Phase Principles
  • Applications of Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Installation of Conduit Systems
  • Installation of Trunking Systems
  • Installation of PVC Sheathed Wiring Systems

You will be assessed throughout each unit. You will need to achieve all units to successfully complete the course.

Successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a NC in Electrical Engineering Level 6.

Studying Pre-Apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering at Ayrshire College will give you the skills, knowledge and understanding to enable you to progress in the following pathways:

  • Further study on HNC Electrical Engineering or HNC Mechatronics

NC Electrical Engineering is placed at Level 6 on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF).
