Overview

Social science is crucial in helping us understand and tackle Society’s problems. Whether it is studying the impact of ever evolving technology on our lives, environmental issues such as climate change, mental health and wellbeing, poverty, inequality, this course will help you understand the relevance of Social Science to 21st Century Our exciting course includes social science subjects such as sociology, psychology, criminology, social research, history and politics. Through studying the social science you will develop a better understanding of societies and cultures. In addition, you will develop your essential skills that will improve your communication skills, self-awareness and confidence, digital skills, self-management, and social intelligence.

Entry Requirements

To apply for this course, you'll need: 

  • a genuine interest in social sciences 
  • five National 5s or equivalent OR a pass in a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 5 
  • If you don't have formal qualifications but have life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please do apply. 

Course Content

This course explores the many fascinating disciplines of social sciences. Here's just some of what you'll be doing:

  • You'll explore criminal behaviour using cases studies of extraordinary criminals, such serial killers, child killers and hostage takers, to develop your understanding of what makes a killer.
  • You'll examine the psychological explanations of human behaviour studying issues such as mental health and wellbeing.
  • You'll develop a sound knowledge of sociological theories and how they explain the structures and behaviour of our society.
  • You'll study the distribution of power in political systems and look at the UK, Scottish and US political structures.
  • You'll study events in history, examining the importance of social, economic and political movements such as the American Civil Rights Movement. You'll assess the importance of these events in shaping our modern world.
  • You'll build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving.
  • Finally, you'll develop your skills in understanding, analysing, evaluating and using complex, formal English in a range of written and spoken forms. 

Careers and Further Study

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

  • Moving onto an HNC course such as HNC Social Sciences
  • Exploring your future career options in a wide range of disciplines and sectors. With additional qualifications in social sciences, possible careers options include education, campaigning, research, the media, social work, the Police Service, voluntary sector, health and social care.
