Ayrshire College students answer the call for carers

Health & Social Care students at Ayrshire College have taken up employment earlier than planned in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

Back in March 2020, HNC and SVQ students at Ayrshire College who had experienced a work placement were asked if they would consider applying for care positions in care homes and in the community.

Due to the coronavirus situation, there was an urgent need for support workers within the care sector and Ayrshire College students were ideally placed to help, with their current knowledge and skillsets.

The students responded to this call from Scottish Care in their droves, indicating their willingness to help out wherever required.

More than 30 students have since taken up positions in North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire.

Christine Hutchison, Head of Learning and Skills for Health and Social Care at Ayrshire College, said: "At Ayrshire College we are extremely proud that many of our Health & Social Care students responded to the call of employment within the care sector during the last months to help during these challenging times we had and are still facing.

"It is important to recognise the commitment and skills of the students who took the offer to provide care and that the knowledge they have is recognised."
