New Student Association team at Ayrshire College
Ayrshire College students have held their annual ballot to elect a new Student President and Student Vice President of the Ayrshire College Student Association.
Voting took place across a full week on the students’ online learning hub, Moodle.
There were five candidates running for office and students voted knowing that the person who received the most votes would take on the responsibilities of Student President, with the runner-up becoming Student Vice President.
Ayrshire College announced on Friday 5 June that Lauren Howieson, 22 from Ardrossan, and Steven Oliver, 29 from Ayr, had secured the majority votes and will be the 2020/21 Ayrshire College Student Association team.
Lauren, who is the current Student Vice President, was voted in as Student President, while Steven is new to the Student Association team and joins following experience gained as a Student Ambassador.
The team will start working together from 1 August 2020. Until then, the current team of Jack McCrindle and Lauren Howieson will continue to support and represent students across the College.
Charlotte Mitchell, the College’s Student Association Advisor said: "I am excited to see what the year ahead brings for the Ayrshire College Student Association. We are going through unprecedented times which will change the shape of learning and teaching, and what the Student Association delivers in the way of representation and support for students will need to adapt to accommodate that.
"All the candidates were particularly strong this year and it’s a pity that there are only two places available, but I am delighted that Lauren will return for a second year, this time as Student President. She will be joined by Steven, who is already making a name for himself as a Student Ambassador and mental health campaigner. Planning will take place over the summer and will begin with the launch of a new look Ayrshire College Student Association Facebook and Twitter."
Principal Carol Turnbull said: "I was very pleased to hear of the election outcome and look forward to working with Lauren and Steven in the new academic year. We know that there will be continuing change to the life and work of the whole College community, as we adapt to the impact of Covid-19. It is vitally important that the student voice is heard loud and clear as we make our plans for all aspects of learning and teaching in the new environment. Lauren and Steven will contribute to that work to ensure a positive learning experience for all our students."
