EGGER employee inducted into Ayrshire College’s Apprentice Hall of Fame
Ayrshire College has announced another inductee into its Apprentice Hall of Fame to round-off Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2021.
The Hall of Fame recognises the outstanding achievement of past college apprentices who have made a notable contribution to their organisation.
Richard Mullen, who works with EGGER, is the sixth inductee in the hall of fame and second of the Class of 2021 following Cameron Girvan at the start of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2021.
Ayrshire employers were invited to nominate former apprentices who have acted as role models in their own field and have been an inspiration to current and future college students.
EGGER, who was named the SME Apprentice Employer of the Year at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards 2019, nominated Richard who started his modern apprenticeship in mechanical manufacturing in September 2004 with Scott Engineering Ltd based in Stevenson.
Richard completed NC, HNC and HND qualifications at Ayrshire College, and more recently an SVQ Level 4 in Management course.
He has worked for Scott Engineering Ltd, GE Caledonian, Hyspec Ltd and now EGGER since starting his career at the age of 16.
Richard said: “EGGER have been fantastic to work for. What I find great about the company is that they are always pushing their employees to maximise their potential. I started as a mechanical / machining supervisor and in the last six years my role within the company has diversified considerably.
“I am also responsible for the training and development of apprentices at the EGGER Barony plant as the technical and apprenticeship coordinator. This includes a cohort of apprentices specialising in mechanical, electrical, control & instrumentation, Production, Manufacturing Science, and administration.
“EGGER Group based in Austria promoted me in 2020 to the support of developing other EGGER plants apprenticeship programmes globally, leading me to mentor the EDP West, Americas and Romanian regions for the company. This includes working with other plants to develop programmes to company standards. To date I have been part of working on or setting up new apprenticeship programmes in USA, Argentina, Romania, France and the UK.
“I still enjoy being hands on every day and watching the apprentices grow and develop is a very satisfying reward personally. I am a STEM Ambassador too which is great to get involved with younger kids finding out about STEM subjects.
“Doing an apprenticeship program can lead to so many different paths and avenues in life. Hard work and enjoying what you do are key to having a rewarding career. Anyone can do anything if they put their mind to it.”
