Ayrshire College students design and test their own aeroplanes
A group of engineering students at Ayrshire College have created aircraft – using only household materials and cardboard.
The fun competition was held after the Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) students learnt all about aerodynamics, with guests from Inter-Tec and Chevron Aircraft Maintenance judging their creations.
The groups were judged on several factors, including aestethics, how aerodynamic the aircraft were, and the distance travelled when thrown.
Team 1 (Samuel Gillon, Jay Lorimer and Rian Kelly) was crowned the winner after their design came out on top across each of the judging criteria.
The contest took place in the PEO group’s Essential Skills class under the watchful eye of Ayrshire College lecturer Sharon Murdoch, which tested their ability to work with others and their problem solving.
All the students involved in the competition are employed in the engineering sector, and study at Ayrshire College to complete their qualification in Performing Engineering Operations within semester one.
Sharon said: “The engineers were great to give up their time to support the students, and the students themselves have thrived learning new practical skills which will set them up nicely for future team projects.”
Kevin Hume, Check Manager at Chevron Aircraft Maintenance, said: “We were invited initially to talk to the students about aerodynamics, aircraft design, and what factors influence that design. In the initial design stage, a lot of them were looking at fighter jets so I’m pleased to see they’ve went a bit more commercial. I’m impressed with what they’ve produced.”
