Ayrshire College wins Blended Learning Award
Ayrshire College has won the Blended Learning Consortium’s (BLC) Impact Award for its innovative approach to self-directed study.
Blended learning is a teaching method that combines traditional classroom teaching with online/digital education. The BLC is a UK-wide network that has been set up to support colleges in the creation and sharing of FE specific resources.
Over 70% of UK colleges are members of the BLC, and they voted for Ayrshire College to receive the Impact Award at their Digital Sparks Summer Conference, held on Monday 4 July.
Ayrshire College created a structured, consistent approach to self-directed study that was attached to over 200 programmes in January 2022, and involved no lecturer intervention.
Over 600 students have fully completed these courses – delivered online – with excellent feedback coming back from the students.
Students on Level 4 and Level 5 courses focused on developing skills to help the transition to the workplace, such as digital literacy, employability, self-management and interview skills. While for Level 6 students the focus was on the transition to higher learning, touching on wellbeing, writing, exams and delivering presentations.
There are now plans to work with curriculum teams to enhance the model for August 2022, allowing curriculum teams to add course specific content to the programme.
Kevan Scade, Digital Learning Support Team Leader at Ayrshire College, said: “We were absolutely delighted that all of our hard work had been recognised by the BLC member colleges, and the success of the Self-Directed Study programme is an excellent way for us to finish an extremely busy year.”
