Ayr Guildry Apprentice of the Year announced
Ayrshire College has selected Wind Turbine Technician Haidee Barclay as this year’s recipient of the Ayr Guildry Apprentice of the Year award.
Each year during Scottish Apprenticeship Week, the Ayr Guildry asks lecturers of Ayrshire College to nominate one worthy student to receive special recognition.
The award was presented to Haidee at the John Mather Awards 2023 event, held on Wednesday 8 March at Ayrshire College’s Kilmarnock Campus.
Haidee Barclay studied the Wind Turbine Technician SCQF Level 6 course at Ayrshire College and is now an apprentice with the Danish energy company, Ørsted.
She said: “The wind turbine course that I have undergone in Ayrshire College was the right course for myself as I have a great passion for renewable energy. Working within the renewable energy field has been my goal for a few years now.
“I had no previous experience in renewable energy, and I knew it was going to be hard to find a job when I had no experience, and this is why I felt the wind turbine course would be a great start to gaining the experience I would need.
“I began to search for courses that would help me when it came to applying for jobs, and almost immediately found that my local college did the exact course I was hoping would be out there.
“Personally, I feel wouldn’t have been able to gain employment with the world’s leading energy company if it was not for the wind turbine course at Ayrshire College.
“I am honoured to have received the Ayr Guildry’s apprentice of the year award. I was humbled to have been selected for such a prestigious award. Ayrshire College has given me a newfound confidence to achieve my goals in life, they have given me the skills and attributes I needed to gain employment with the world leading offshore wind company and I will be forever grateful for everything the college and lecturers have done for me.
“Now I have completed my course and gained employment, I can share my passion and enthusiasm for renewable energy with Ørsted, thanks to Ayrshire College.”
