Ayrshire College students first to reach Prince’s Trust milestone
Ayrshire College is the first partner in Scotland to have delivered 200 Prince’s Trust Teams and a special celebration event for Team 200 was held at The Park Hotel in Kilmarnock recently, marking the successful completion of the 18-week course.
The Prince’s Trust Programme at Ayrshire College offers students the opportunity to improve motivation, qualifications, confidence and existing talents while learning new skills, completing team activities, workshops and work experience.
The students showcased a special film, which they had all created, in the style of ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get me out of here’ called ‘I’m Employable, Get me out of here!’, for family and friends, culminating in the presentation of certificates by the Prince’s Trust Team Leaders. Not only were the students presented with their completion certificates, they also achieved a Saltire Award for volunteering.
Employability and Engagement Officer, Jackie McFadzean said: “I have been very privileged to have successfully led the Princes Trust Team 200 course. The young people involved have made it an amazing experience.
“It is with pride that I watched them present to an audience of over 100 people with the confidence and self-belief that they have gained, working together to put on a showstopper of an event.
“I’m delighted that the majority of the students are moving onto other courses at Ayrshire College and I wish them every success for the future.”
Student Lisa De-Sykes from Team 200 enjoyed the course which has helped her decide what to do next. Lisa said “Before I started the course, I was unemployed. The Prince’s Trust has changed my life. I’ve met new people, gained lots of new skills, and I now have more career choice opportunities. I’m excited to continue at Ayrshire College on the Level 5 Spa and Beauty course in August.”
Head of Schools, Engagement and Widening Access at Ayrshire College, Carol Nisbet said: “The fact that as a college we have now ran 200 Teams, shows the commitment and belief that we have in the Prince’s Trust programme. The reason that the programme is so successful, is not only down to the fantastic partnerships we have in the local community, but also because of the dedication of the team leaders, and of course, the students."
The future looks bright for the group, with 100% of the young people who completed the course moving on into further education, training, volunteering or employment. Applications are now open for the next programme starting in August.
