Karen Dunbar entertains Ayrshire College crowd
Ayrshire College welcomed the talented comedian Karen Dunbar to its Ayr Campus for a special podcast episode recording and exclusive screening of the BBC Scotland documentary Karen Dunbar’s School of Rap.
Karen was joined for the ‘An Audience With…’ Rockpool Podcast episode by the documentary’s director Rachel Coburn. The pair did a Q&A with an audience of Ayrshire College students, fielding questions about the documentary as well as their respective careers to date.
65 students were in attendance, across all levels of the Music, Sound Production, Media, Film & Broadcasting and Social Media Content Creation classes.
They were entertained with a 15-minute interview with Karen and Rachel, before the screening of Karen Dunbar’s School of Rap, which sees Karen help five elderly woman come together to perform their own rap about family, friends and faith.
Karen Dunbar is best known from portraying many characters in the sketch comedy show Chewin’ the Fat, and her own programme, The Karen Dunbar Show. She revealed at the Q&A that one of the highlights of her career was leading the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Rachel Coburn is a BBC filmmaker from Cumnock. Karen Dunbar’s School of Rap is her first longform documentary, and it has been attracting overwhelmingly positive reviews across the national media.
John McBlain, the Music, Performance and Media lecturer at Ayrshire College and Rockpool Podcasts host who interviewed Karen and Rachel, said: “This collaboration for Rockpool Podcasts was many months in the making. Having spent a lot of time pulling everything together - from speaking to Rachel and Karen to getting the theatre space set up, and every detail in between - having felt the energy in the room on the day and heard the overwhelmingly positive feedback from our students at Ayrshire College...it was a flawless victory of an event!”
