Minister for Higher and Further Education visits Ayrshire College
Ayrshire College was delighted to host a visit from Graeme Dey MSP, Minister for Higher and Further Education on Tuesday 22 August.
The minister met with key aerospace staff, employers and apprentices during the visit to the Aeronautical Engineering Centre and learned about the important role Ayrshire College plays in providing the skilled workforce for Prestwick Aerospace.
The minister heard how the college effectively collaborates with the aerospace cluster to develop its curriculum offering to align with industry requirements, addressing critical skills gaps, with a focus on the significant support provided to aerospace apprentices. He also learned about the exciting future plans Ayrshire College has in responding to the region's economy and shaping the future of the aerospace sector in Ayrshire and beyond.
Angela Cox, Principal and Chief Executive of Ayrshire College, said: "Ayrshire College is proud of the partnership we have with the aerospace industry in Ayrshire. With over 400 apprentices in training at any one time at the Prestwick Aerospace cluster, it was a pleasure to share with the minister how we are responding to our employer needs and listen to our apprentices share their positive learning journeys."
Higher and Further Education Minister Graeme Dey said: “The aerospace sector plays a crucial role in the economy of Ayrshire and across Scotland more widely.
“It was enlightening to see the innovative ways that Ayrshire College is seeking to address skills shortages in the sector. The Scottish Government will work collaboratively with the college to ensure that this creative thinking continues going forward.”
