New Ayrshire College Student Association team elected

Students have voted online to determine who will be the Ayrshire College Student Association’s Student President and Student Vice President for the upcoming academic year.

NQ Introduction to Film & Broadcasting student Linda Corbett, 39 from Kilwinning, won the week-long election to become the 2023/24 Ayrshire College Student Association Student President. Tim Chan, 20 from Kilmarnock who currently studies HND Music, has been announced as the Student Vice President.

Linda has been selected to replace outgoing Student President Ellie Jamieson, 20 from Ayr, and Tim will take over from Student Vice President Robert Kean, 49 from Saltcoats.

The two Student Association positions help to delivering a programme of events, student representation, advocacy and support to students. They are also invited onto the Ayrshire College Board of Management for 2023/24.

Both roles are full-time, paid positions.

Eight students ran for the Student President position within the Ayrshire College Student Association. Students voted from 8-12 May through the my Ayrshire College app and via email to choose who would represent them from August 2023.

The first major event for the new team will be to help organise the Ayrshire College Freshers events, which are held across all three main college campuses in September.

Linda Corbett, Student President elect, said: "I'm delighted to be taking up the role of Student President for the upcoming academic year where I will carry on the already stellar work of the Student Association. I will endeavour to better understand the needs and wants of students, advocate for students and work to implement strategies that will aim to improve the student experience, address known issues and increase the visibility of the Student Association, while also championing the incredible projects and events being delivered by students!"

Tim Chan said: “I am honoured to be elected as Vice Student President. This position holds a lot of influence within the college, and to strive for a stronger community with my vision wouldn’t be possible without the support of everyone. The ideas I want to bring forward will not be static but will be shaped by student feedback and opinions. To serve in this role, I hope we can all work together in harmony for the betterment of the future.”

Charlotte Mitchell, Student Association Advisor at Ayrshire College, said: "The Student Association looks forward to welcoming Linda and Tim to the team. We would like to take the opportunity to thank our outgoing officers for their dedication and support to Ayrshire College students over the past year.

“The Student Association endeavours to carry on their work with an exciting year ahead, delivering representation, advocacy, and support to students through various initiatives, campaigns and through our student led clubs and societies, making sure that students can make positive change and that they have the best possible experience here at Ayrshire College.”
