New Pride Collection Launched
The College has a new set of 31 books written by or about LGBT+ people thanks to the Student Association successfully securing funding from NUS’s Think Positive Small Grants Scheme.
This new set of books, including titles from authors such as Dean Atta, Sarah Prager, and Douglas Stuart, has been given the name ‘Pride Collection’ by the LGBTQI student group, and can be found in the Learning Resource Centre at Kilmarnock Campus.
Charlotte Mitchell, Student Association Advisor, said: “Every person deserves to see themselves, and the diversity of their communities, reflected in the resources available to them at college. It not only better reflects the world we live in but also encourages people to respect those around them and appreciate difference.
“This collection gives us the opportunity to celebrate the contribution the LGBT+ community has made to literature, both directly and indirectly. Many of the titles have been chosen by students with plenty more suggestions to add to the collection which we hope to grow over the year. A big thank you to the NUS Think Positive Small Grant fund and to the Student Association’s LGBT+ and Trans students’ officers for making this fantastic collection happen.”
Members from the College’s Senior Leadership Team, the Chair of the Ayrshire College Board of Management, and students and staff are contributing personal messages to be included in each book as a further demonstration of the College’s commitment to being a safe and inclusive place for everyone.
Angela Cox’s, Principal and CEO of Ayrshire College, message reads: ‘Colleges, as social anchors, have a responsibility to educate our community and celebrate diversity in all its forms, so that we all contribute to a more tolerant, understanding, and inclusive country. Vibrant places are created when difference is the norm, and everyone can participate in their own unique and special way. That’s why ensuring our diverse student and staff population are represented in our learning materials is so important.’
The College is currently working towards achieving the LGBT Youth Charter (Foundation) mark following feedback by students.
